What is Statistics?

Statistics has a simple definition that it is a collection of mathematical techniques which are used to analyze, calculate and present data. It conducts various types of experiments and surveys on certain data from which we can derive certain information for the purpose of making decisions. It uses quantitative models, synopses, and representations to analyze data from real-life studies. The most popular statistical measures are mean, median, mode, regression analysis, skewness, variance, and analysis of variance.

Statistics is another discipline studied in social sciences. It is used in other disciplines and with other disciplines like business, psychology, humanities, governmental procedures (political science), mathematics, etc. A statistical analyst uses a process to characterize a dataset. Statistical procedures are used to summarize these processes. Sometimes the dataset is based on a large sample of a population. The analyst then has to develop interpretations of the population based on this sample. By studying the sample through statistics, we can predict accurately the population’s features. Statistical assignments are based on the usefulness of statistics in practical applications. Most of the statistical assignments revolve around statistical problems and finding out their most probable solutions.

What are the Branches of Statistics?

There are basically two types of kinds or branches of statistics. These are as follows:

  • Descriptive Statistics: This branch of statistics deals with the collection of data and its presentation in various types or forms such as Tables, graphs, and diagrams. These forms are used to describe the data by finding the average and other measures with the help of statistical techniques. This branch of statistics is mostly used by businessmen to present their annual reports, bank documents, and final accounts. The main statistical methods used are mean, median, etc. This simply provides summaries of the samples and measures. Descriptive statistics have not been developed on the basis of probability theory.
  • Inferential Statistics: This branch is used to make decisions based on data interpretation. Various statistical techniques are used for analyzing data. Then estimates are made and conclusions are reached through sampling and tests made on the data. Inferential statistics, in fact, start working after descriptive statistics has done its work. The data analysis is taken into consideration and some inference is worked out from that analysis. Judgments are made of the probability which has been seen with the data. This branch of statistics believes that sampling is not accurate and involves sampling errors and thus a sample cannot be taken as a perfect representation of a larger section of data or a population.
