Introduction

The current case study associates with the nursing issues that are to be dealt with regard to Mr. Antonio De Luca. The man is of 69 years old and a retired pensioner clerk. He is reportedly suffering from numerous diseases namely hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Diverticulosis, and Cataract in his right eye. The man lives with his daughter, son in law and teenage grandchildren. Due to lack of time as the parents are office goers, they most likely rely on food such as pasta and take away food that are less time taking. This affects the health of Mr. Antonio. Along with this he is also a passive smoker and occasionally suffers from breathlessness. He stays in a small bedroom downstairs and has to climb up the stairs to be with the family during meal and other wise. Due to heavy breathlessness on account of smoking he had a fall from the stairs and was taken to the hospital. Mr. Antonio is also a patient of abdominal pain as well as bloating. The aim of the researcher is to find out the nursing issues and portray the ways in which the stated issues can be amended. The first nursing issue is related to the absence of a health meal for Mr. Antonio and the second issue is regarding the maintenance of the patient’s room.

Nursing Issue One – Absence of Healthy Food

As stated in the case study, the daughter and son in law of Mr. Antonio are full time workers and due to constant time pressure relies on easy to make recipes such as pasta or they prefer take away food that is easily available. Although Mr. Antonio enjoys his meal, but he seldom eats any vegetable or fruit the absence of which makes his body deficit of all necessary nutrients. This can further degrade his quality of health and him vulnerable to many more diseases. In the words of Happell et al. (2015), on account of his old age, it is important for him to follow a nutritional diet to develop his immunity and fight the diseases.  Hence, the absence of healthy food is considered to be the first issue of nursing.

The absence of a healthy diet can also be life threatening for Mr. Antonio in the long run. According to Papastavrou & Andreou (2012), the absence of healthy food reduces the power of a human body to fight back the disease especially in the old age. In addition to this, the social life of Mr. Antonio is also affected due to his chronic diseases. He is not able to drive anymore and so relies on other family members to take him to the local RSL club to enjoy his food and beer with his friends. The appointed nurse could drive him to the club to socialize with his friends and enjoy his day out. As stated by Blegen (2012), the psychological needs as stated by Maslow are also required to be fulfilled for the improvement of a patient’s health. The social interaction of Mr. Antonio with his friends and other people will help to improve his health by keeping him in good mood.

The preference of MR. Antonio regarding his diet should also be taken into consideration as in old age people are tend to be more foodie. Here, the good quality of service of the nurse by providing a rich diet full of nutrition to Mr. Antonio as well as giving his medicines on time will ensure his speedy recovery. The nurse would also take him to meet his friends and help him have a good social life. The nurse could also help him to quit smoking. The absence of these would lead to life threatening situations for Mr. Antonio.

Nursing Issue Two – Maintenance of Cleanliness

As per the case study, Mr. Antonio an old age man used to clean and tidy his room himself and as it suggest the room is supposedly not in a good condition. The health of Mr. Antonio may not always favor him so that he may be able to clean his room. In addition to that he regularly suffers from diarrhea and breathless and in such a condition he requires to stay away from dust and dirt. A nurse could help to maintain a good level of hygiene in the room of Mr. Antonio. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs the maintenance of sanitation and hygiene fulfills the psychological needs of the older adults.

The effect of this nursing issue can be severe on the functional status of MR. Antonio. As observed by Anderson et al. (2015), the absence of cleanliness in a patient’s room can be home to numerous disease causing bacteria and viruses. These could get mixed into the food and water of Mr. Antonio and enter into his body giving birth to several other diseases. At an old age a human body gets more affected to bacteria and viruses.

Therefore in the words of Morrall & Goodman (2013), the stated issue of nursing requires attention, and the appointed nurse needs to keep a check on the maintenance of hygiene of Mr. Antonio’s room. The absence of such would be life threatening as it could lead to the growth of deadly diseases.

Conclusion

The following assessment reflects upon the nursing issues that are required to be taken into consideration. The nursing issues regarding the health of Mr. Antonio are namely the absence of good quality nutritional food and the maintenance of hygiene of Antonio’s room. It is essential for Mr. Antonio to have a healthy intake of nutritional food to fight against the diseases he is already suffering from. The nurse so appointed is to take care of the health of Mr. Antonio by providing him with healthy food keeping in mind his food preferences. The cleanliness of the room will also be maintained by the nurse to keep the diseases at bay and lighten the ambience of the room as well. The nurse would also drive Mr. Antonio to his favorite club so that he could meet his friends and enjoy his favorite meal. The appointing of nurse will be beneficial for Mr. Antonio from all aspects.
