Introduction
This lesson plan is developed for a class of 10 students who are in the beginner level of English proficiency. The come to the class once a week and they are motivated enough for the class. This lesson plan designed a one hour class for these students for learning vocabulary words for friends and family. The students are all monolingual and are interested in learning from the class. They are between the ages of 6-8.
Rationale behind the lesson
I have chosen the topic of vocabulary words for friends and family for this class of beginners as I believe that this is one of the basic facets of language learning which they can use in their immediate surroundings. Vocabulary is a basic and fundamental part of the English language and can be taught even to those who do not have much familiarity with letters. After going through the details of the students, I understood that they have not been introduced to the concept of letters yet. Thus, it would have been difficult to pursue a more difficult course. Moreover, as the class likes to interact with each other as well as their teacher, there would be much less difficulty to teach about vocabulary words for friends and family as the lesson plan would be interaction based. This would not only facilitate a good sense of team spirit among these students but also promote a sense of fraternity while promoting learning and retention. It should also be noted that the learning of vocabulary words for friends and family would help in learning other concepts as well. For instance, with the help of this lesson, they would also be introduced to societal concepts of relationships and family. They can understand how family is formed through this class as well.
Contributions of each activity
Even though the students cannot read alphabets, they are familiar with words. They can relate to the stories which they already know. That is why the lesson involves story telling as an active material. This is being done to promote auditory learning wherein the student learns by listening. It has been observed that the retention rate in such cases is high since students of a young age are usually interested in stories and listen to them attentively. Students often learn more if they think that what they are doing is not learning at all. Apart from that, stories instil a lot of concepts in children. Moreover, storytelling would help them situate the words that they learn. This would make them understand how to use which word where, without requiring explanation of grammatical concepts which would be too advanced for their age. This would also enhance their listening skills. The following activity of question answers of that story would be able to check their retention rate as well. The use of word cards and examples will help them understand the concepts of vocabulary words for friends and family which they are not familiar with. Showing the word card, the words will also have a visual interpretation for the students. They would be able to associate the words with the people in their family.
Other activities
It is of utmost importance that one should have a list of activities to be prepared so that an informed decision could be made in regard to developing a lesson plan especially for beginner learners as it is critical to choose activities for them. I had shortlisted activities such as using black boards to show them how family trees work. However, as they do not know how to read I had to cancel that. This would only add to the complexity of the exercise and also since students would be unintelligible this would result in a loss of interest on the part of the students. Moreover, I thought of using an internet application to make them listen to the usage of words. However, that also had to be cancelled as I realised that this class would be difficult to manage. The kids have to be a little more disciplined first to be able to handle gadgets inside a classroom. Lastly, I also thought of using a word game. It would have been like this – one student would say a word and with the last letter another student will say another word. Then I would be asking questions on those words related to the concept of family and friends. I also had to cancel this as this did not seem as relevant to the learning outcome as the chosen activities to me. None of these activities could encapsulate the interest of the students while also fulfilling the goals of the lesson to teach them the requisite vocabulary pertaining to friends and family.
Backup plan
In case the activities do not work, then I will use the word game that I have mentioned previously. I understand that this will not be as impactful as the other activities could prove to be. While it would definitely gather the interest of the kids as it is an exciting game, the chances of retention by the kids is pretty low, which defeats the purpose. However, I would be able to make the class interesting by narrating fun material in regards to the words chosen by the students. It would also increase their stock of words. In addition to the game, some tests or quizzes must also be conducted in order to test the retention rates among the students.
Conclusion
While developing this lesson plan, I had to go through a significant amount of material which provided me with a considerable knowledge regarding pedagogy and learning techniques. I also got to know that different students have different style of learning which impacts their learning outcome. This lesson plan, thus have been developed keeping in mind the various learning styles of students. They are designed to cater to students with all kinds of learning patterns and mental capacities. It ensures that no child shall be left behind or feel lost through the course of the lesson.
