Introduction

Environment is the primary provider of sources of raw material to business organisations. A majority of business processes are based upon the environment and are highly affected when any damage is being caused to the surrounding environment. In order to reduce the adverse impact of environment on commercial organisations, sincere efforts are being made by the companies operating across the globe for integrating the environment related interest with the modern business practice so that they are able to find the suitable and efficient ways through which business can attain their business objectives. Further, the customers are also supporting companies that are significantly contributing towards protection of the environment and the natural resources.  Customers are potentially responding to the organisations that are using sustainable practices and are very well concerned about the corporate social responsibility of the business and how well they fulfill their duties in respect to this. Thus, in the current business research, we will be analyzing the impact of environmental awareness in the current business practices of the organisation.

Literature Review

Importance of generating environment awareness in the current business practice

According to Graci & Dodds (2008), the main benefit of generating awareness about the various environmental factors helps a business to adopt sustainable business practices that can lead to improvement in the business process and a subsequent reduction in the organization’s different types of cost. The business entrepreneurs can achieve a number of benefits from such practices in the market and thus, the actions and awareness with respect to the environment can help the business in gaining success. Further, an environment friendly business has lower adverse impact on the surroundings and therefore helps in preserving the natural resources. The other advantages of adopting environment friendly business practice includes usage of such products that decreases focus on the scarce natural resources (for example, instead of using ground water the various other options are rainwater, water stored in tanks and sprinkling of water through sprinkler, solar water heater etc. It also include using of products that are manufactured from recycled material like using the recycled plastic making of the office supplies and furniture manufactured from recycled rubber.

In the words of Chiou, et. al., (2011), appropriate focus on the similar business activities that every organisation performs to do it in a different way also helps in generating awareness about the environment protection. For example, the interstate meeting lead to generation of air pollution as the officials has to travel through plane from one place to another which causes air pollution. This can be reduced by conducting meeting through online conference calls and various other applications that enable to manage such meeting from the head office only. The environmental awareness helps in reducing the organization’s cost of conducting operations through recycling and reusing activities. For example, there is a wide usage of paper in any type of organisation. A small change in the commonly used practice with reference to paper usage can lead to effective generation of environmental awareness. The companies can avoid wastage of paper by not using it unnecessarily and using digital mediums and other communication tools for conveying the official message. Also, while printing the paper, it should be printed on both sides so that paper can be utilized in a more effective manner.

As per Brammer, et. al., (2012), environment friendly business practices can lead to attracting new customers. The promotion of environment friendly business methods can set the organisation distinct from its competitors and provides a competitive edge over its competitors. The company can create a new customer base that holds greater concerns for the environment and wants to purchase products and services from an environment friendly organisation. Further, the sustainability of the organisation can be improved through environmental awareness as it helps in decreasing the adverse environmental impact of the business. The business can have long term success if it has comparatively less dependence on the natural resources than its competitors and poses suitable methods for managing the mounting costs due to climate change, environmental damage and degradation. The other practices that are included in green management (ecofriendly) are effectively complying with rules and regulation related to environmental protection, reduction in greenhouse emissions, water conservation and adopting the R3 practices (reduce, reuse and recycle) along with the implementation of environmental management systems.

Environmental issues for which awareness needs to be generated in the business practices of organisation

In the opinion of Jamali & Mirshak, (2007), a number of issues arise when efforts are being made to generate awareness among the business organisations regarding creation of better environmental surroundings. The corporations before making attempts are required to make a suitable analysis of these issues and thus, design their awareness campaigns accordingly. The various kinds of environmental issues that adversely affect business are issues related to air and water emission, industrial waste and sustainable development of the available raw material. Addressing these issues effectively require that the business should change their working procedures and equipment for meeting the previously set standards. Waste is considered as one of the issues that top the list of issues faced by business regarding environment protection. In case of manufacturing of different kinds of products, waste is generated at some point of the process and the waste is dumped into rivers and other channel which leads to environmental degradation. This kind of waste highly affects the water bodies which and sometimes leads to death of the marine animals. The solid waste is buried in the ground which affects the productivity of the land. The smoke that is created through burning the waste creates air pollution and leads to reduction in the quality of air.

In the view point of Williams & Schaefer, (2013), climate change is also considered to be one of the global problems that is associated with the awareness generation. Climate change has its implication in all respect such as economic, environmental, political, social and in case of distribution of goods. In the current times, this is identified as one of the core challenges that the business organisations are facing. If the adversities of the climate change are not addressed properly, it can lead to unstoppable damage of the ecosystem that can have severe consequences for the future generation. The climate change can also lead to greater demand for energy because as the climate will get warmer, more energy would be consumed by people to experience the cooling effect. There would be more demand for air conditioners in business organisations which would add to higher consumption of energy along with higher bills of electricity. This would result in high operational cost for the business and the business consumption of natural resources like water and fossil fuels would be increase leading to lack of available resources with the company for producing goods and services.

According to Gadenne, et. al., (2009), another issue for which the awareness should be generated is the pollution that is one of the major contributors to the environmental damage. There are various causes of pollution like the combustion of fossil fuel, release of harmful toxins and gases in the manufacturing process of products by factories and industries. The pollution and the modern living standard are incomplete without addressing to the problems and cost of pollution in long run. The cost of pollution is mainly examined in the form of costly medical bills that the companies and industries have to reimburse when workers fall ill due to pollution. There is also loss in terms of employee productivity. The organisations find it quite difficult to potentially retain employee on these highly populated locations and as a result they have to pay more wages and salary to their workers and the employees in comparison to companies that are located in less polluted areas.

Determining the technique adopted for better generation of environmental awareness

As per the view point of Blowfield, (2007), a much better way to achieve effective awareness with regard to environment and its protection includes is the technique of “Green Business”. It is basically identified as business practices that are assumed to be environmentally sound, makes the usage of natural and organic goods for building factories, providing much better protection against the harmful industrial emissions and obtaining the sources of raw material through environment friendly approach. The technique mainly focuses on having the least negative environmental impacts and provides one or the other kind of positive benefits to the natural environment. Further, the green business uses least amount of natural resources for completing the allocated tasks and makes an effective usage of the other sustainable materials and methods such as recycling of electronics, paper, aluminum, plastic and glass and using sustainable products like those are plant based or recycled and grown through organic methods.

In the words of Olson, (2009), there is a great impact of implementing the technique of green business in the various business functions of the organisation. The implementation of the green business practices focuses on acquiring a deep knowledge with respect to numerous requirements of clients along with the ability to satisfy the demands of the clients by making effective contribution to the environment sustainability. The managers of the organisations are supposed to develop suitable structures and systems within the organisation in order to meet the requirements of the green business practices and simultaneously attaining the strategic objectives of the business. The key functions in a business can be classified in six different functional groups in order to avoid the duplication of activities. These functions can be grouped into: supply chain management or purchasing, operations or manufacturing function, information technology or finance function, marketing or sales function and human resource or general management function.

In the opinion of Boudreau, et. al., (2008), the implementation of green business practices on the six business functions showed positive result and demands have been raised to implement these practices should be adopted on a large scale. Although each function has faced one or the other problem but the overall response is taken to be positive. With respect to the manufacturing and marketing function the differences are found in the perception of small and large scale business organisations regarding the practices of green business. The small companies would generally found the implementation of this technique to be costly and risky but it should be adopted by all organisations irrespective of their size. In case of purchasing or supply chain function, the business of different size i.e. small; large or mid-size have distinct perception with respect to green practices. The green purchasing methods might be costly in the short run but will provide greater advantage to the organisation in future times. With respect to the distribution or logistics function, implementation of the green practices would be more difficult which is running since a long time while the small business can implement it more effectively. It is suggested that the large scale organisation should basically adopt these green practices.

Recommendations that should be adopted for generating environmental awareness through the modern business practices

According to Fowler & Hope, (2007), there are a numerous method through which awareness can be generated regarding the environmental practices of the business which are as follows:
Reduction in overhead costs through green buildings: The green buildings involve a number of options for saving the environment like, for decreasing the computing power requirements, companies can shift to virtual machine environment. For maintain the cooling in offices, the cinderblock walls are used which helps in naturally maintaining the temperature of the building for the major part of the year which decreases the need for cooling equipments like air conditioners. In case where the energy needs of the company cannot be managed, the installation of energy fuel cell generators and the on-site windmills is made by the organisations so that they can produce clean power fuel themselves. Further, the adverse environmental impact can be reduced by the organisation with the help of obtaining the certifications like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) which certifies building regarding the energy efficiency.

As per Babiak & Trendafilova, (2011), the cost of waste removal can be reduced with the help of methods like composting and recycling. The solid waste of the business can be managed with the help of these and they can significantly reduce the solid waste. Further, a comprehensive culture of sustainability needs to be developed which will help the business to achieve the positive results in the field of environmental protection. When employees of an organisation come together for composting and recycling activities a sense of team spirit is developed among employees who have positive impacts on the overall functioning of the organisation. When a business adopts environment friendly practices, its chances of sustainability increases and customers become the part of this good cause.

According to Green Jr, et. al., (2012), the business organisations that uses less paper are tend to be much faster and can be easily approached along with comparatively cheaper processes. Business should resort to digital mediums of transferring information and for communication as it helps in saving of paper which ultimately leads to less cutting of trees. The cost incurred for transactions done thorough papers would be comparatively more than the transactions done through online media.

Conclusion

From the above business research, we can conclude that impact of environmental awareness on the current business practices would enable to conduct its operations in a way that will help it to achieve sustainable growth and relative development. The practice of green business mentioned in the above research would help the business organisations to adopt ecofriendly methods of operations to its various departmental functions. This will greatly support the business to reduce their different types of cost. Further, the recommendations provided will help in implementing the practice of green business so that the corporate sector can be more aware about the resource that is taking from the nature and its subsequent replenishment.
