Executive Summary
Henry Ford had a visionary idea of producing cheaper cars as compared to the cars that were manufactured before 1908. He built the company and started working. He was greatly impressed by the model that was used by Fredrick Taylor. This was a model that was based on saving time and doing extra work. He, therefore, adopted this model and the production of his company went up immediately. He was able to produce more cars at a low cost. Different countries are characterized with different cultures. Australia is a country that has mixed cultural practices that have been practiced from ancient times in Australia.
SECTION A:
Activity 1:Â Ford and Taylorism
Question 1: Would workers in Australia, America or Europe accept the Taylorism in this form today?
In today’s era, the workers from Europe, America, and Australia cannot accept Taylorism in their workplace. This is because since this theory and model was developed there has been high levels of changes in the industry. Automation and modern technology have made working easier and there is no justifiable reason as to why this model can be adopted by anyone. In today’s era also, the way the workers were expected to work extra hard can be termed as misuse of workers against their human rights. Therefore, workers cannot work under intimidation from the employers. Labor unions also are so powerful in fighting for the rights of the workers. Therefore, workers in today’s era cannot accept the Taylorism (Giordano, 2016).
Question 2: Consider the design of scripts for use in Call Centres, can you see Taylorism in that? Explain. example
To a great extent, the theory of Taylorism can be used in the call centers but cannot be adopted completely. Call centers are divided into different specialization depending on different niches. This is a part of Taylorism that would be adopted in the call centers today. Depending on the employee’s job role or area of expertise the work can be divided into a different section. However, the part of Taylorism that needs the worker to work as a machine cannot be applied in this era. The call centers can use other technologies such as chatbots and computers to serve the customers instead of employing workers who are would do exactly the same work and even less. The computers can perform the tasks well without the motivation of higher pay. Taylorism is seen in the division of labor and having computers to save time (Stoller, 2015).
Question 3: This ‘clip’ is showing history from 100 years ago. Some would say that ‘the world has moved on’ and these ideas are out of date. However, could there be parts of the world today for which these ideas might be just what they need? Explain.
Even after over 100 years, there are still industries across the world that need the judicial Taylorism idea application. Since the time the idea was developed scientist has worked on improving it to a better model that can be used in modern days. Principles and models that are based on this idea last for a long time and give a lasting mark to the function that is done. The principle of rewarding employees who are hardworking is still used to date. In the current age, every technology that is developed in all industries is mainly aimed to ensure that the time spend doing particular different tasks is reduced and kept at the desired level. In a current era and generation application of Taylorism entirely promises results and better performance of the function. All that is necessary is to ensure that the principles are reviewed to meet the current technologies before using them. This is to endure that the principles are relevant (Witzel 2015).
SECTION B
Activity 2: Online tool to explore different countries’ 5 dimensions by Hofstede
Question 1: How does the Australian culture compare to other world cultures (eg. Your home country or other countries that you have visited)?
Australia has similarities and differences with my home country. My home country is India which has similarities with the culture of Australia. Both the countries India and Britain were formerly colonized by the British colonies. Both countries have therefore adopted and shared common cultures most of which were obtained from the colonial times. These include their mode of worship, their national languages, their systems of education, their recreational activities among other cultural facets. For example, both Australia and India love cricket. However, during the colonial times, the motives of the colonial masters were different. In this day the British wanted to make money from the country of India. On the hand, Britain used Australia as a site for dumping the people it considered useless in the society. The colonial effect and perspective from Britain managed them. These differences are the main things that brought the differences that are seen in both cultures. In India, most people are a merchant and focus on making money. This is the culture that has even grown to the current culture. The Indians who are rich oppress those who are poor. But in Australia people care for each other. This is because from the colonial time they were neglected and they cared for each other (Turner, 2016).
Question 2: Do you agree with the survey results for the Australian culture? Why or why not?
According to the survey the results were found in dimensions of last two were later found under different studies as compared to the first four survey. These two dimensions appeared differently to other cultures. According to the survey, the culture is mixed and can be the best culture in the globe. I agree with this survey. Australia has a mixed culture that can easily accommodate all people who can work in the country. The country has culture can easily accommodate everyone. All religions are available and active in Australia. There are low cases of discrimination and racism among the people who live and work in Australia. The working culture of Australia people uses English as the official language. This is the language that is known and spoken to proficiency level in all parts of the world. This means that Australia is a good place with a modern culture that can accommodate everyone (Helmreich, 2017).
Conclusion
The principle of time-saving and increasing the production through the strenuous efforts as adopted by Henry Ford can give a company a competitive edge. An organization is able to save much time and produce more. This in turn reduces the cost of the items and increases the profitability of an organization. Different culture has been associated with different factors that date back to colonial times. Surveys have been conducted across Australia and different countries to study the differences that exists in different cultures. However, Australia in some instances Australia has common cultural practices across the world.
